Spider Veins

Spider Veins (Telangiectasia)

Spider veins are small, damaged veins that appear on the surface of the legs or face. They are usually red, blue, or purple and look like spider webs or tree branches. While they are thinner than varicose veins, they are often a sign of underlying venous pressure and can cause localized stinging or itching.

  • Key Features of Spider Veins:
  • Cosmetic Impact: Often prevent patients from wearing shorts or skirts due to self-consciousness.
  • Localized Discomfort: Can cause a localized “stinging” or “burning” sensation.
  • Precursor Sign: Often appear alongside larger, underlying varicose veins.

The Procedure for Spider Vein Removal

We use precision techniques to collapse these tiny veins and restore the natural appearance of your skin.

  • 1

Visual Mapping: We use “trans-illumination” lights to see the “feeder” veins that give rise to the spider clusters.

  • 2

Micro-Sclerotherapy: Using the finest needles available, a specialized solution is injected into the tiny veins.

  • 3

Absorption: The solution causes the spider veins to close and gradually be absorbed by the body over 4-6 weeks.

  • 4

Post-Care: Light compression or simple walking is encouraged to ensure the veins stay closed.

Why Treating Spider Veins is Important

While often considered cosmetic, spider veins are frequently caused by “venous reflux” in deeper veins. Treating them not only improves the appearance of your legs but also allows us to screen for and treat any underlying valve issues before they progress into full-blown varicose veins.
